Early in 1938 BMW began producing an advanced range of motorcycles,BMW R71 is one of them.This included the R71 with a 750CC side valve engine designed to better handle the additional stress of a sidecar attachment. After a Hunting trip with Joachim Von Ribbentrop, German Minister of Foreign Affairs, Stalin took five BMW R71 motorcycles back to Russia. As Germany needed money to finance the war effort and Russia wanted to produce a reliable, latest technology, heavy class motorcycle of its own, the ideal solution was a license to manufacture deal struck for Russia to manufacture the BMW R71 design. This was achieved in a seven year trade agreement signed in Moscow by Soviet Foreign Minister Vyacheslav Molotov and the German Foreign Minister, Joachim Von Ribbentrop on August 23, 1939.
